ModelSim PE can crash on simulation for a 211 error. This error is a license error, caused by ModelSim trying to use some feature that shouldn't work on the Personal Edition. Solution: Use ModelSim SE
I had this exact problem, but it wasn't an error with versions of Modelsim. The directory that my files were located in (a school-created partition, 600mb) was full. Upon clearing out some old files, modelsim worked fine. Make sure that there is space for modelsim to create files.

I have Modelsim SE version and happens exactly the same.
